Does Baby Have Fever?
Knowing whether a baby is too hot or too cold is sometimes a puzzle because baby does not know how to speak and difficult to know what he feels. It is sometimes a reason for the child to cry , so it must be able to determine if it is a factor of discomfort or not. Sometimes the extremities of his limbs (hands, feet) can be a little cold because he has trouble reheating them, but that does not mean it is cold. Here are different techniques to know if baby is too hot or too cold in her clothes:
Touching the baby’s neck : this little corner of his anatomy is sometimes more revealing than the baby’s forehead. The baby front can be cold if you’re outdoors, while it’s too hot in its clothes. Touch the base of his neck, see the top of his back by sliding a little your fingers in his clothes, to really detect his body temperature.
The blue lips : if baby, or your young child, has the lips that turn blue, it is a sign that it is cold. I find that it is particularly visible at the pool with my 2 year old child: after 40 min, his lips turn blue. it’s usually time to get out of the pool 🙂
baby sweats : if baby sweats, the base of her neck will be wet. if he is lying on his back, the clothes at his back, in contact with the mattress, will also be wet (and vice versa if he is lying on his stomach). it is obviously sign that baby is too hot.
If you think that baby is hot, you may need to check that it does not have a fever. To check that baby has a fever:
Compare the temperature of your forehead with yours : this is a quick way to see if your baby has a fever, touch your forehead first, notice its warmth, then put your hand on the baby’s forehead and compare. if you think his forehead is warmer than yours, take his temperature.
Using rectal thermometer : The only reliable way to know the baby’s temperature is to take her temperature with a thermometer. I have tried almost every type of thermometer: ear thermometer, front thermometer, teat thermometer, etc. The ONLY effective thermometer that gives reliable and fast temperature is unfortunately the rectal thermometer, preferably electronic. the normal temperature of a baby is between 36.5 and 37.5
